China Ranked in the Top 5 for the First Time in Yearly Madrid Protocol International Applications for Trademark Registration (Feb-2017)

According to the statistics of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the number of international applications for trademark registration filed by Chinese applicants in 2016 increased by 29.8% from the previous year to a total of 3,014, with China ranking fifth among Madrid Union. The number of trademark applications per year exceeded 3,000 for the first time in China, and this was the first time that China was ranked in the top 5. The total number of valid trademark registrations in China under the Madrid System has reached 22,270 through the end of 2016.

Although the number of the Madrid System applications filed by Chinese applicants has been ranked in the top ten among the Madrid Union over a long period of time since the People's Republic of China gained access to the Madrid System in 1989, this is the first time for China to reach the top 5.
